Cahiers du Cinéma was one of the most influential magazines in the history of film, founded in 1951 by André Bazin, Jacques Doniol-Valcroze, and Joseph-Marie Lo Duca. Before making their own films, these young critics attacked traditional French cinema in their writings as “le cinéma de papa” and praised the director as the individual auteur of the film.

This issue of Cahiers du Cinéma takes an in-depth look at Agnès Varda’s film Sans Toit Ni Loi [Vagabond], reviewed at the opening by Alain Bergala, followed by a great essay by Sandrine Bonnaire, the lead actress, who writes about her work on the film and the special collaboration with Agnès Varda. Under the title “Un jour sous le ciel” Agnès Varda describes a working day of shoot in the form of a production report. All articles are accompanied by numerous beautiful images from the shooting and film stills.
