The French academic literary journal La Revue des lettres modernes was founded in 1954 by Michel J. Minard and was dedicated to the history of ideas and literature. Later, Minard established an additional series for film studies entitled Études cinématographiques, each with an entire monograph devoted to one author.

This edition of Études cinématographiques, directed by Michel Estève, is dedicated to Agnès Varda and includes important essays by Bernard Bastide, Yvette Biró, Jean-Yves Bloch, Frank Curot, Joel Magny, Michel Mesnil, Jérôme Picant, Vincent Pinel, René Prédal, and Marie-Claude Tigoulet.

From Varda’s beginnings as a photographer to analytical texts on her films and an extensive film and bibliography, this book offers a comprehensive film-theoretical examination of her work.
